Hello ECS 210!!

Hello everyone! Julie has asked me to write a post about blogging and what’s been going on in my life of blogging and teaching. I haven’t posted as much on this blog as I had during university, pre-internship and internship. I really enjoyed using my blog during this time because I was able to post my thoughts about my journey and share some pictures. I really liked when others would comment and share their thoughts and advice as it helped me to know I wasn’t alone and I found it helpful. Now that I’ve started teaching I have created a classroom blog. I am currently teaching grade six and my classroom blog is misswagner6.blogspot.com. I encourage you to check it out. Here, I post homework assignments, announcements, websites for the students and bonus homework. Parents enjoy it as it an effective way to communicate with them. Hope you continue to enjoy your journey as a teacher and I wish you all the best!

Busy Busy Busy

Wow! It’s been so long since I’ve made a new post on my blog. I have been extremely busy since starting my new job in January. I have learned so much as the learning curve was very steep and I was forced to learn quickly. I can’t believe that there is only two weeks left of school and then it’s summer holidays. Since this is my first teaching job it seems weird to think that I won’t be getting a job for the summer. Instead I will be doing some planning for my new position next year, teaching grade 6. I think that it was a great experience teaching in a small town for my first job. I was able to get to know most of the students within the school and learn alongside them. The staff was very helpful when I wasn’t sure what to do as it was all so new. I feel that I have matured and gained a great deal of experience. I can’t wait to continue my journey as a teacher!

Document Camera

On Friday I had a document camera hooked up in my Kindergarten classroom. I haven’t had much experience using these however I used to have a math teacher who used one. Yesterday I used it for the first time with my Kindergarten’s and they loved it! They thought it was really cool that you could put your hand under the camera and it would show up on the SMART board. I used it to read a book to the students. I really liked using it for this because I didn’t have to worry about some students not being able to see the pictures. In the future I hope to use it for some demonstrations in other subjects so that the students can follow along.
I was trying to explain the concept of volume to the grade 5’s and I was having trouble drawing the three dimensional cubes on the board. There isn’t a smartboard in the math room so I was unable to use the document camera. On Monday however I plan to have the grade 5’s come into the Kindergarten room so that I can show them the document camera and use it to explain how to calculate volume since my drawing skills aren’t the best! Hope they enjoy it as much as my Kindergarten’s did. 🙂 Yay technology!

Well I made it! I got through the first week of teaching. I was quite nervous and overwhelmed prior to starting this new journey. There is a lot to know and it is a huge curve up. I am teaching Kindergarten every other day as well as grade five math and student support teacher. The part that I am most nervous about is the student support aspect. This is all new to me and I hope that I am able to pick up on the responsibilities quick! So far I have had two student support days and one kindergarten day. There are eleven students in kindergarten and ten students in my grade five math. This is a nice and small group and a great way to start my teaching career. On the first day back I was introduced at the school assembly. Since then, many students have said hello when I pass by them in the hallway which is a great welcoming feeling. The staff is already bugging me to spend more time in the staff room but I have been so busy that it’s hard to get there. By the end of this school year I am sure I will have learned a lot. One of my personal goals will be to try and make grade five math a little more fun for the students. When I talked with the students a lot of them had negative feelings towards math. When I was going to school I did not like math either so I hope to learn from that experience and see if I can make it better for them. I always welcome any tips and resources so bring them on!

The Final Week

Wow… I can’t believe four months have passed by already! I don’t want it to end. I have had such an awesome time at this school with the staff and the grade one students. Memories have been created that will last a lifetime. I have grown so much since the beginning of my teaching career and my learning hasn’t stopped yet! I feel that my classroom management skills have strengthened quite a bit since the beginning of my internship which was one of my main goals. I am glad that I was able to go on a field trip with the grade ones as it was a good experience to plan something outside of the classroom environment. I have picked up so many neat activities I will use in my future teaching career. Some of the things I enjoyed most was having objects for each letter of the alphabet, using egg cartons for ten frames, using shaving cream for spelling and having cardboard letters to create words. Even though I’m excited to spend time with my family this coming weekend for Christmas, I hope this week goes by slow. On Wednesday the students have their Christmas concert and the grade ones will be singing a song about rocking at the North Pole. I am sure they will do a great job. The hand bell choir will also be performing the song We Three Kings. Hopefully I can snap a few pictures to share!

Awesome Memories in Grade One

On Friday my teaching partner from my pre-internship came for a visit! She had the day off of school because of parent teacher interviews so she decided to make a trip to come see another school and grade. It was great seeing her and being able to be in the school environment again with her. She was able to see how our school day runs and the different types of students we have within our classroom. Throughout the day she mostly observed but was also a great help for the students when they needed help spelling or a reminder of what they should be doing. In the afternoon the students listened to a story about the gingerbread man and later made their own ginger bread men using liquorice and craft supplies. They all looked great!
Today was not the same without her there and I truly miss her company. The day went fairly well and I am slowly starting to feel a bit better after being quite sick for two weeks!! In the afternoon I was with a student and we were leaving to go to the music room to practice our Christmas song. I had a cut on my finger and I asked the student if he could get me a band aid for my finger. He quickly grabbed a band aid, took off the packaging and put the band aid on. As we were leaving to go to the music room he sealed it with a kiss to make my finger feel better. He just stole my heart! I thought that was so sweet of him and I’m not sure what I’m going to do when I leave. I will miss him along with the other students so much!! This boy and I have gotten quite close and he seems to do his work quite well when I am around so I hope he continues to do a great job when I leave! I don’t want my internship to end!! It’s all coming to a close wayyyyyyy too fast!!
